Tories make animal welfare pledge
By FWi staff
THE Conservatives have promised to introduce sweeping new animal welfare laws if they are returned to power, reports The Daily Telegraph.
Under a draft bill, police would be given powers to take preventative action before any harm was caused to animals.
Clearer labelling would be introduced to end the “scandal” of consumers unwittingly buying meat reared in conditions below British standards.
Efforts would also be made to persuade the World Trade Organisation to recognise animal welfare in future international agreements.
The question of hunting is not covered in the proposals, which were welcomed by the National Farmers Union.
