Trading standards officers slam ‘GM-free’ label

THE Institute of Trading Standards says funding shortages will prevent new rules on labelling genetically modified (GM) food from being properly enforced

It is to tell the government that attempts to reassure the public over GM food will fail unless new money is found for monitoring food for GM ingredients

The rules requiring retailers to label GM foods have been in place since March and will be extended to landlords, café owners and restaurateurs in September

Trading standards officers added that plans by multinational companies to put “GM free” labels on foods without any agreement on what the phrase means will cause confusion.
