Travel stays popular

YOUNG peoples enthusiasm for travelling abroad to get farming experience remains as strong as ever despite the terrorist attacks in America, says Sue Pothecary of AgriVenture.

The organisation, which offers opportunities to 18 to 30-year-olds, increased its numbers heading overseas by 50% in 2001 to their highest since 1994 – and is expecting 2002 to be equally busy.

UK and Eire manager Sue Pothecary says: "We are thrilled that young people are realising what an asset it is for them to expand their experience by working and travelling overseas.

"Despite the tragedy of foot-and-mouth disease, there is a still a big demand for the skills of our young farmers and horticulturists overseas and many have seen it as a golden opportunity to broaden their skills for a few months while the rural communities in the UK return to normal."
