UK tops cull calf scheme
A NEW EU commission report on the effects of its calf processing scheme shows the brunt of production cuts falling in the UK.
Of the 600,000 calves slaughtered since Dec 1, 55% have been in the UK, with the vast majority of these being dairy types. According to the report, only four countries are applying the scheme.
There is a more widespread uptake of the early marketing scheme with 13 member states involved. This scheme offers a premium for selling calves at 15% below each countrys average slaughter weight. *
