Ultragen sale chance to buy famous names

THE Ultragen Holstein Friesian herd was certainly "on song" when it was sold for John and Kate Hudson, leading figures in Londons music recording industry, who are emigrating to the USA.

The herd was established 10 years ago and has been developed using many of the worlds most sought after cow families and genetics.

Bluebil, Gail, Mars Marcy, Scarlet and Sweet were among the great names on offer.

The Global Gene Syndicate, based at the Weeton herd of John and Doreen Loftus in Lancashire, has already invested heavily in some of the families on offer. And it was one of the biggest investors at this dispersal at Kirkby Thore, Cumbria last week, paying the top price of 8000gns for Ultragen Jabot Carmen Ebony and 6800gns for her dam Ebonys Carmen.

Carmen Ebony calved as a heifer in April and the bull calf by Fatal was bought by Genus. The five-year-old Ebonys Carmen gave 18,816kg in 365 days in her second lactation at 3.4% fat and 3% protein. She has a PIN £133 and ITEM £143 and is the highest scoring daughter of Mascot.

AVERAGES: 11 cows £2763; six served heifers £2782; 17 maiden heifers £2852 and three bulls £455. (Norton and Brooksbank)

Cattle fitter Mike Potter prepares Broeks Idee, which made 5600gns.
