UMs 0.7p/litre lift

UNITED Milk has announced a 0.7p/litre rise in its headline milk price to 19.5p/litre from April.

Forward deals in the liquid milk sector and with dairy product manufacturers, particularly cheese makers, have helped lift the price.

Chief executive, Don Morris, doubts there is much more in the market at the moment. "The big problem is that butter and skimmed milk powder prices are weakening." Export difficulties due to the foot-and-mouth outbreak have led to a softening of values.

"I see 19.5p/litre now, and a bit more in May, as realistic. Some would disagree, but you cannot pay more than the product is worth." &#42
