Varied OSR yields in Nottinghamshire
CHRIS COCKAYNE, who farms at Cropwell Butler near Nottingham has had variable yields with oilseed rape.
Four hectares (10 acres) of Pronto, drilled into a good seedbed on lighter land, yielded well at 3.7t/acre (1.5t/acre). But 13ha (32 acres) of compass yielded 2.7t/ha (1.1t/acre), which was grown on heavier clay. These figures are slightly above and below average.
Forty-seven hectares (116acres) of Optic spring barley should be ready next week, weather permitting. “The crop is variable, from good, to bad where it has been grown after sugar beet.
“The wheat is also variable.” He is growing Savannah and Equinox.
He says bad floods struck the farm in July when the Vale of Belvoir received bad storms, which were very localised.
