Vining pea drill delay warning
RAIN-HIT drilling programmes for vining peas could hinder harvest schedules and lead to extra costs as factories face down-time, warns the Processed Vegetable Growers Association.
Floods in parts of Yorks on land saturated by April and May rains mean vining pea drilling will continue well into June, far beyond the normal completion date, says PVGA manager Tim Mudge.
"It has been very localised. Some growers have been able to catch up but others only 15 miles away are still struggling, and it is getting very late.
"It is very disruptive because it is such a time-sensitive and expensive crop to harvest. The knock-on effect is that there could be additional costs due to factory down-time." *
