Welsh salute Safeway beef deal

By FWi staff

WELSH farmers have welcomed a 3 million deal by Safeway for their countrys prime beef.

The deal, announced by National Assembly First Minister Rhodri Morgan, follows lengthy negotiations between the supermarket and Welsh Lamb and Beef Promotions.

Safeway will stock branded Welsh beef at all its stores in the principality.

“This contract is wonderful news for the Welsh beef industry,” said Bob Parry, president of the Farmers Union of Wales.

“Safeway has demonstrated its confidence in Welsh beef in the best possible way by placing this 3m order.

“I sincerely trust that this will pave the way for more substantial contracts for Welsh produce in future.”

Mr Parry congratulated WLBP for its hard work in securing the contract. WLBP estimate that 5000 cattle a year will be sourced from Wales.

This follows the launch of Welsh Mountain Lamb in Safeway stores two years ago.

Following the bombshell that Dairy Crest is to axe two processing plants and 545 jobs in Wales, Mr Parry said it was good to receive some good news.
