Lucy Eyre

Wern Holding, near Welshpool, Powys

  • Farm size: 51ha
  • Enterprises: Lleyn sheep, British White cross Hereford cattle, pigs
  • Annual rainfall: 1,600mm
  • Soil: Clay/clay loam

New entrant Lucy Eyre moved to a former dairy farm at Wern, near Welshpool, when she took on a 51ha Powys County Council-owned holding in 2020.

Since then she has increased her beef herd of British White and Hereford-cross cattle to 33, and downsized her flock of ewes to 90 head.

Her aim is to shape a system that puts the soil and other natural assets front and centre.

Transition goals:

  • Strike the right balance of livestock numbers for the farm
  • Reduce inputs and maximise the use of grass to farm in harmony with nature
  • Re-establish direct meat sales to customers
