‘A bog in places’ – harvest update

He has had 6.5 inches so far this month, but has still managed to cut 100ha (250 acres) of his wheat between the showers.

Nijinsky and Claire pleasingly yielded 11.12 t/ha (4.5 t/acre) on some of his best land after a crop of potatoes and peas.

Nijinsky was on trial this year and had problems with sprouting in the ear. But Mr Cooper says the sprouting is solely due to the weather and will still grow the variety again next year.

His philosophy is that he won‘t worry too much about the weather because there is nothing he can do to change it; but he did admit: “It‘s getting serious.”

He still has another 400ha (1,000 acres) of fit wheat needing to be cut and needs 10 days of good weather to get it out of the field.
