A dry harvest leads to success in Aberdeenshire – harvest update

The storms hit some other farmers very hard only half an hour away from Mr Davidson‘s farm.

With a relatively storm free harvest, his Winner was one of the best oilseed rape crops he‘s ever had, with yields higher than usual at 4.2 t/ha (34 cwt).

“It was fantastic. We‘ve had the best yields ever – it‘s been good up here this year.”

The 32ha (80 acres) rape crop was brought in a fortnight ago after being swathed for 10 days. The moisture content averaged 17%.

“We could have left it out there for a couple more days, but there were forecasted storms so I decided to just get it off the field with a high moisture content.”

Mr Davidson‘s wheat is another week away from being harvested, but the spring barley might be ready in the next few days.

He says these crops are looking very good and he‘s optimistic that this year is going to be a successful one.
