After a good start, oilseed rape bucks the trend

Both harvests had good results. However the oilseed rape hasn’t been quite as successful.

“We’re getting just over 1 t/acre (2.47 t/ha), which is not too bad considering how bad it looked earlier in the year.”

Moisture content is about 8% and some of the straw is still “looking a bit green”.

“We’ve done well to keep the crop whereas farmers nearby have ripped it all out.”

The area was badly hit by problems with establishment and podding.

“This time last year we were working hard to keep the rabbits and pigeons away.”

Mr Carter has so far harvested 16 ha (40 acres) of Canberra, but also has another 220 ha (510 acres) Canberra, Winner and Recital varieties still to harvest.
