All done now
“On the whole it hasn‘t been too bad, but it‘s definitely one season I‘m glad to see the back of.”
Mr Wilson progressed with harvest, despite high moisture contents, in order to try and save milling quality.
Two thirds of his wheat has made milling quality.
“We were harvesting the Hereward at 22% moisture, but I still think I did the right thing.”
He was most happy with his Hereward, which yielded 10.13 t/ha (4.1 t/acre). His Malacca yielded 8.65 t/ha (3.5 t/acre) and Sokrates 9.14 t/ha (3.7 t/acre).
He carried out some contract work on a nearby farm where Deben yielded 8.65t/ha (3.5 t/acre), which was surprisingly good considering the soil type, he said.
Although Mr Wilson has achieved good quality, he has had to dry large amounts of wheat, generating a massive drying bill.
“We‘ve been hit by a double whammy of wet crops and high diesel prices.”
The bean harvest also finished with only average results. Although there was very little shedding, Mr Wilson said: “The beans were on the brink of falling out.”
The wet weather has led to difficulties with compaction, making drilling a much harder job this year.
“The grain trailers have made a mess in the field. They‘ve been sinking and leaving six inch deep wheel marks.”
He is now hoping that the weather does not become too dry, so the quality of the seed bed stays in tact.
“It‘s typical. As soon as we put the combine away we get some nice weather.”
