An average harvest for Richard Wilkinson

Richard Wilkinson has finished harvest at Corpselanding Holme Farm, Hutton Cranswick, Yorkshire, completing a very average year.

“The Pearl winter barley was only slightly down on yield, averaging 6.9t/ha,” he said. “Usually we would expect around 7.9t/ha.”

In contrast, the Viscount winter wheat was of poor quality, and only yielded 8.4t/ha.

Last year the same variety reached 10.3t/ha.

Diego proved to be even worse, with yields of only 7.4t/ha, compared to 11.1t/ha the year before.

Bushel weights were also slightly down on last year, at 69kg/hl.

“With such low yields from the wheat this year there has been a great deal less product to sell,” said Mr Wilkinson.

“We plan to begin drilling from 20 September, once we’ve finished spraying stubble, hedge cutting and muck spreading.”
