Average Worcs harvest

Andrew Symonds from Lincoms Farm finished harvest three weeks ago in Worcestershire. He said yields were down on last year but this had been expected due to the drought in June and July.

Sixty-five hectares (163acres) of Einstein winter wheat averaged 8.5t/ha (3.4t/acre) with moisture levels of 12.5%. Despite low protein levels, Hagbergs were good and the crop was to go for milling, with a premium if available.

Optic spring barley yielded 6.25t/ha (2.5t/acre) from 65ha, which he said was about average. Nitrogen levels were fairly high but he said the crop was borderline malting quality.

“Generally it has been a fairly average year but it is all in the shed. We had a good run at it with no drying costs, and we escaped most of the rain.”

Mr Symonds plans to grow oats next year, along with Eintsein wheat and Optic spring barley.
