Cereals 2010: RRA seeks new members

The Rothamsted Research Association (RRA) is appealing for new members to join the charity.

The RRA is a two-way knowledge transfer which aims to promote science at the Rothamsted Research across the agricultural industry.

It seeks to foster close relations between scientists to keep those involved in agricultural, environmental and land management businesses informed of the latest developments in scientific research.

The RRA currently has 350 members and is now seeking to broaden its membership and encourage people to influence the development of research in the UK.

“We want to broaden our membership base to include growers, agronomists, independent advisors and agrochemical companies,” said Pam Chambers, the RRA’s technical information contact, speaking at Cereals.

“We want to get more industry people involved – both in the running of the business and research.”

Andrew McShane, managing director of Hutchinsons crop production specialists, said there were many benefits of joining the RRA.

“It’s a great way to get fantastic ideas into the field,” said Mr McShane, who runs a big trials research programme at Hutchinsons.

“Involvement in the RRA benefits growers because both they and their advisor can make agronomic decisions based on the best possible information available.

“Access to the latest research can help you to make the very best judgments.

“As agronomists, if we don’t bring the latest technologies into the field, crop yields will stagnate.”

Members receive regular newsletters and invitations to workshops where there is direct contact with scientists involved in research.

Other benefits include access to exclusive members’ web pages, interactive workshops and technical demonstrations.

Membership costs £35 per annum (£30 if paying by direct debit), or £600 for non-voting affiliated groups. For more information visit the website www.rothra.org
