Concern for seed wheat in Norfolk
Peter Seaman at Great Farm, Norfolk, said it was pouring with rain and nowhere was moving around Norwich. He had three and a half inches of rain in the past week, causing combines to be at a standstill.
Winter barley, spring barley and oilseed rape was all in the barn, but very little wheat had been cut. “No one has done any amount in the area, and we haven’t done enough even for a good guess of how it has done.”
He was concerned the rain would damage 40ha (100ac) of seed wheat that had not been cut.
“Claire has not been too bad in the past so we’re not too desperately worried, but the seed wheat is what we’re concerned for. There were no growing bits this morning but the forecast is not very exciting for this week.”
Cocktail spring barley had yielded 6.4t/ha (2.55t/ac) from 26ha (65ac). It was currently held in storage so he said nitrogen had not been tested yet.
“The quality is a little on the thin side but as yet there have been no problems with nitrogen levels on winter crops so fingers crossed.”
