A new nutrient management service could help farmers manage their nutrients for optimum financial returns through a package of analytical and advisory services.

Nutri-Link, from Carrs Billington, essentially will help farmers put a nutrients cycle together, explained the company’s chief technical officer, Duncan Rose. “The basis of Nutri-Link is to adopt a structured approach to analysis of soil, manures, herbage, forage, other feed inputs, drinking water and blood and to link the data together to develop integrated fertiliser, feed and manure plans and recommendations.”

This could benefit farmers by maximising financial return on nutrients; optimum soil, crop and animal health; demonstrating best practice and legal compliance and managing the critical balance between micro-nutrients and potentially toxic elements, eg copper and selenium.

“For example if you weren’t aware of selenium levels in soil and you were providing it in the diet, there is the potential for selenium toxicity. Farmers may also find, where a nutrient is lacking, it is cheaper to put the nutrient, such as selenium, in the soil rather than feeding it directly in the diet.”
