Easy does it in Lincs
An easy harvest with no drying costs is how Lincolnshire farmer Edward Whitfield sums up this year’s harvest.
With a dry run until last night’s half inch of rain, he has been making steady progress on the farm with all the oilseed rape combined.
Astrid and Lioness oilseed rape achieved 3.7-4.9t/ha (1.5-2t/acre) at a moisture content of 6.5-7%. Astrid being low biomass which meant “combining was easier” while Lioness “was a little disappointing”. Castille yielded around 2t/ac.
Wheat has varied on the farm with Hereward yielding 7.4-9.3t/ha (3-3.75t/acre) while Cordiale only achieved 6t/ha (2.5t/acre).
Both wheat varieties obtained a bushel weight of 78-80 and a moisture content of 12-13%, quality being “above average” this year.
