Essex harvest complete

Crops include winter wheat, oilseed rape, peas and sugar beet. He is now busy helping out neighbouring farms.


He believes he has been very lucky with the weather, escaping many of the heavy downpours reported elsewhere. Only 22mm of rain has fallen during the recent spell of wet weather.


Overall Mr Wombwell is “fairly pleased” with the quality of his two main wheat varieties; Xi19 and Malacca, although has noticed a difference between those harvested before and after the wet weather.


“Hagbergs held on quite well – the highest was 305, while the lowest 254.” Average protein contents ranged between 11 and 12.3%.


He is “very pleased” with the results from his Maplus peas, which yielded 1.8t/acre.


However, went on to add that it proved to be a tough crop to combine, given the tricky weather conditions.


By comparison to many cereal crops, Mr Wombwell added that this year‘s sugar beet looks very well.


“We could probably harvest the crop now and still fill quota!” he remarked.
