French variety Grizzly suits UK
WITH STIFF straw, excellent stem canker resistance and high gross output, Grizzly oilseed rape is well adapted to UK conditions.
So says Cambrian Seeds‘ Mike Pickford who for two years has been trialling the former PBI Cambridge winter variety – the first to be launched here by new French owner RAGT and a candidate for HGCA recommendation this year.
It is a “low biomass” type now popular with UK growers, notes Mr Pickford.
It produces small seed, which means that to achieve normal plant establishment through 100seeds/sq m, only 4-4.5kg/ha are required.
And because it is sold by the kilo its low sowing rate cost benefit can be passed on to growers, he explains.
“Good standing ability and stem canker resistance are the key features needed for success with oilseed rape this year.
“Grizzly has top ratings for these resulting in top performance at locations ranging from TAG trials at Morley, NIAB strip plots at Hereford and independent merchant trials in Yorkshire.
“Grizzly offers growers a cost-effective way of securing top returns from their oilseed rape crop next year.”
