Michael Manners in Staindrop, Durham, said the end of harvest was frustrating due to rainfall. “We’re getting a bit done now but we’ve still got 40ha (100ac) left from 240ha (600ac).”

Yields were all just over 10t/ha for first wheats Robigus, Gladiator and Alchemy, and second wheat Napier. “Gladiator seems to be performing best but there’s not a lot of difference between them.”

Yields were about on the farm average, and bushel weights were all in mid 70s kg/hl.

Mr Manners was not concerned for the quality of his remaining crops: “We’re cutting now and the grain looks fine – it is all standing. The straw is starting to look a bit rotten, but it all should be alright.”

Weather permitting, he expected to finish within the next couple of days.

He planned to grow similar varieties next year.

“It has been a funny year – but the grain side of things will be ok. It’s the potatoes that will not be brilliant because it was too hot in July and so they couldn’t stand the heat.”
