It’s a tough year for some

Alan Randall has been finding this year‘s harvest quite a challenge.

“I just hope we can do better next year,” said Mr Randall.

He said that the Malacca wheat has been disappointing because of the dry conditions earlier in the year.

“Malacca isn‘t suited to dry conditions, it really suffered on the gravel during a spell of dry weather.”

However his second Deben wheat was a success, yielding 9.27 t/ha (3.75 t/acre).

“For a second wheat, this is pretty good,” he said

The area had “a massive storm” last night (Aug 5), which meant he was not able to carry on combining this morning.

But he hoped that the hot weather today might allow him to “try and give it another go after tea”.

As with many other farmers across the UK Mr Randall is disappointed in the market prices.

“It‘s a sad reflection on our efforts and also it leaves us nothing to re-invest,” he said.
