Late harvest for this Scot

Scottish farmer Hamish Forbes has still not completely finished combining his barley.

Mr Forbes said it‘s been “wet, foggy and misty” on his farm in Nairn, Moray.

“This season has suited the crop because we need moisture on our light soils, but we now need some dry weather to actually harvest.”

He‘s cut 22ha (55 acres) of Pearl at 15% moisture, yielding just less than 7.41 t/ha         (3 t/acre) at 65 kg/hl specific weight.

“The weather has been against us – usually this time of year we‘d be cutting spring barley.”

“Last year was an early growing season but on these light soil we lost out on yields.”

Mr Forbes is happy because “it produced a big crop of straw” which he then uses for his 400 cow suckler herd.

100ha (250 acres) of spring barley, in three varieties: Prisma, Optic and Markoff; will be sprayed-off soon, ready to be cut in about 10 days.
