Leicester wheat quality excellent

Robert Tullis at Frelsworth Farms, Lutterfield, said harvest had gone about average this year, having finished August 10. “We have not broken any records but then it was not a disaster.”

Twenty-two hectares (55ac) of Castille oilseed rape averaged 3.13t/ha (1.25t/ac) which was not disappointing, he said.

Solstice and Xi19 winter wheat averaged 9.4t/ha (3.75t/ac) from 100ha, with protein levels of 13.5% and Hagbergs of over 300. Bushel weights for Solstice were 79kg/hl and Xi19 was “marginal” at 76.5kg/hl.

“I was very pleased. Quality was excellent and it all met milling spec.”

Mr Tullis was unsure which varieties to grow next year. “We’re concerned milling wheat premiums are not sufficient to cover growing them. We plan to grow Group three wheats instead, but we have heard Robigus has not done so well this year, so it is all up for debate.”
