Light land disappoints for Hants osr

Rain preventing harvest is frustrating for Stephen Horn on Bushy Down Farm in Hampshire.

Winner, Expert and Recital oilseed rape produced variable results, from a disappointing 3.6t/ha on lighter chalk land, to an above average 4.25t/ha on the better land.

Mr Horn was surprised by these variable results and suggested it could be due to the soil type and lack of moisture, but “there was no real pattern”.

He said: “Recital is consistent and has never let us down, but the Winner was disappointing.”

He also had some concerns for Expert oilseed rape due to a small amount of light leaf spot, which was a product of the weather pattern, he said. The other varieties were fine.
