OSR yields lower than expected

Oilseed rape harvest was going wet and slow for Tim Hamilton in Deal, Kent. Two fields of Astrid yielded 4.48 and 4.34t/ha, plus two of Winner yielded 3.4 and 3.46t/ha.

He was disappointed the crop was not as good as it looked, with yields lower than he had hoped. But the results were still better than last year.

The cause of this, Mr Hamilton said, was the high biomass of Winner rape. “They looked good strong crops, but the yields were not good.”

Next year he plans to only grow Astrid because he was very pleased with the results. He added: “Yields were significantly better than Winner.”
