Pleasing OSR yields but take-all concerns for Robigus
Despite rain last night (27 July) Westville farm, Lincolnshire has missed the worst of the storms and the wheat combining has not been delayed.
With all of the Expert oilseed rape now in, at an average of 4.9t/ha (2t/acre), all hands are on deck to get the wheat in as soon as possible. The oilseed rape yield is good for the farm and James Lunn puts this down to it following set aside.
The 20ha (50 acres) of second wheat Malacca and 57ha (140 acres) of third wheat Einstein harvested so far have shown average yields of 9.9t/ha (4t/acre) and moisture content of 17-18%.
Einstein has also produced good specific weight while Malacca has not done as well as expected.
Mr Lunn is concerned with his area of Robigus which is showing signs of white heads and suffering from take-all. “This has struggled as we were unable to apply growth regulator due to the weather”.
Ploughing is also suffering in the dry weather. “Due to our land being heavy we are having problems with the hard ground smashing the plough”.
