Rain hit Yorkshire wheat quality
Zebedee and Robigus averaged 10t/ha across High House Farm in Richmond, North Yorkshire. “It is all finally finished now but it was a bit of a battle,” said Phil Dowson.
Quality before the rain was fine but it suffered when the rain started. Specific weights remained in the mid-high 70s kg/hl, but Hagbergs fell.
“It is all biscuit wheat. The quality was shot down so it was no good after the rain.”
All the wheat had been sold forward in the grain pool. He said it had been a similar year to last year, but yields were slightly higher.
“If it was not for the droughty weather we would have broken records, so it was a fairly average year. There were no problems other than the lack of rain – it was relatively easy.”
He had just started sowing Lioness and Castille oilseed rape, as well as Zebedee winter wheat.
