Silage and OSR in Suffolk
Gerald Godfrey cut grass silage on Friday (22 July) at Great Common Farm, Beccles, Suffolk, ahead of a drier-looking weekend.
“We started cutting cut two fields of Astrid oilseed rape on 12 July, and managed to do a little bit more on Wednesday (20 July), but the weather has been very catchy.”
Cut at between 9.2% and 11% moisture, the Astrid had yielded a pleasing 4.7t/ha (1.9t/acre).
The rest of the rapeseed was still ripening, and, given the better forecast over the weekend, Mr Godfrey decided to cut silage on Friday.
“We’ll get back into the rapeseed after that.”
Crop: Oilseed rape
