Success for Essex wheat

Harvest was going “better than expected” for Peter Wombwell from Rectory Farm in Saffron Walden, Essex. Despite being lower than last year, he was pleased Xi19 and Malacca wheat yielded an average of 8.75 – 9.4t/ha with a good bushel weight.

Protein was also good at 13.5 – 14.3%, and good Hagbergs of 269 – 350.

But the peas were not so good with 44ha yielding 2.5t/ha due to the drought in June/July aborting the top pods.

While it has not been a record breaking year, he had no complaints with the wheat so far.
