Unpleasant Wilts harvest

“It was absolutely desperate 10 days ago and we‘re relieved to have nearly finished.”

Mr Hues has 1,000ha (2,500 acres) of Claire. The first wheats, grown after oilseed rape, yielded 9.88 t/ha (4 t/acre), while second wheats yielded 7.41 t/ha (3 t/acre).

He is going to carry on harvesting again later this afternoon (Sept 2) and hopes to get lower moisture contents.

“We‘re trying to avoid the drier. We‘ve been cutting at 22% moisture this year and drying bills are massive.”

“I‘m glad we harvested at that moisture because we managed to save some of the hagbergs. We got a £3/t premium which covered the drying bill.”

Mr Hues said his oilseed rape was far from a success this year.

“The winter rape was a big disappointment. We were only managing to get 1 t/acre (2.5 t/ha) while the spring rape did 1.75 t/acre (4.3 t/ha).”
