Variable Herefordshire yields
This is the first year that Peter Bawn has ever started and finished harvest in August at the Garnon’s Estate, Herefordshire. He said wheat went very well, but yields were still very variable.
Second wheat Einstein came in at 8.25t/ha which he said was not bad considering the lack of water. The grain was also quite dark and he hopes for good protein levels.
Robigus has been the most variable variety with yields of 9 – 11.2t/ha across the farm. Nijinsky was most consistent at 11t/ha. The farm average was just under 10t/ha this year which was quite pleasing although he wished it was worth more.
Mr Bawn said his Robigus could probably get a biscuit premium, but will be delivered to a local chicken mill, as haulage costs are lower.
Yields are 10 – 15% down on last year which he said was purely down to lack of moisture.
Next season he plans to grow less wheat and more break crops such as oilseed rape preparation for a big wheat crop the following year.
