Waiting game in Winchester
Tom Coleman from Lower Norton Farm in Winchester, Hants, was waiting for rain to stop so harvest can continue. He had cut 68ha of Expert oilseed rape at 3.75 – 4t/ha which was above budget. The yields were pleasing considering their “disastrous” oilseed rape harvest last year.
After two good days of cutting spring barley, Mr Coleman is waiting for the weather to settle to continue cutting. Sixty hectares of Optic yielded 6.25-6.9t/ha. He was pleased the early crop just about scraped malting quality, despite fairly high nitrogen levels.
The yields were slightly down on last year’s record year, but still on budget this year.
The wheat was looking pretty good and he hoped things would be ok as long as the weather settled.
