Weather causing desperation
Paul Temple says this year‘s harvest has been a struggle due to very bad weather his farm has seen in recent weeks near Driffield, East Yorks.
“It‘s a perpetual foggy haze – we’ve probably only received about 4 hours of sunshine in the last week.
“It‘s desperate up here on the north-east coast – it‘s forced me to harvest in less than ideal conditions.”
The Carat barley harvest has finished, yielding 8.6 t/ha (3.48 t/acre) with specific weights at 67kg/hl.
“The Carat was reasonably reliable – the problem is that I lost a lot of it on the floor and now my hay is still lying out in the field getting wet.”
Mr Temple said his oilseed rape is very hard to harvest this year.
“It‘s so tough to get through the combine because there is so much moisture and sap still in the straw.”
He is happy with his Royal and Pollen varieties when taking into consideration the poor weather.
Mr Temple thinks that his Robigus, Claire and Expert wheat will be ready in 10-14 days.
