Wet weather’s causing a tricky harvest – update

“We got another inch last night (Aug 22), but then again it feels like we’re getting an inch of rain every night.”

Soissons did very well as it was harvested before the rain, getting 10 t/ha (4.05 t/acre), while the early Claire yielded even better at above 10 t/ha (4.05 t/acre).

Mr Rayner has harvested 400 ha (1,000 acres) of his wheat with none of it being cut below 20% moisture and is worried about the 160 ha (400 acres) still to do.

“We need every inch of crop we can get, because we can’t afford to lose any profit.”

Due to wet weather, he’s only been able to harvest in quarter days, because every morning he has to wait for the crop to dry and then the wet weather returns before real progress can be made.

“At the beginning of the month we were 5 days away from finishing the wheat, but then the rain came in and now it feels like we’re going backwards.”

Before the rain set in, Mr Rayner said the quality of the wheat was good, but now after the rain, most of the wheat will go for feed.

“We’ve given up harvesting the wheat. We’re now onto the beans because they’re slightly drier.

“The beans yielded 1 t/acre, apart from that it’s good.”

Mr Rayner is still hoping for some dry weather so he can get the wheat off the field.
