Wheat bulb fly thinned Cambs crop

Martin Spence sold 26ha of Claire winter wheat on a contract on Wolvely Holes Farm, in Ealing, Cambridgeshire. It yielded 7.5t/ha, which was “nothing too sparkling”.

Wheat had been finished for ten days which he said was definitely ahead of last year. There were no specific weed or disease problems this year, but wheat bulb fly thinned some areas, he said.

He said he is pleased with how things have gone and with the way the contract has worked. He is waiting for winter and spring beans to be ready.
