Wheat harvest stopped due to rain
Martin Boulden received 72mm of rain in the last 24 hours on his farm near Ashford, Kent.
“We had a storm last night and then another this morning. It just never seems to end.”
So far he’s managed to combine 140ha (350 acres) of Soissons, 20ha (50 acres) of Claire and has just made a start on the Hereward before the rain set in.
“Hopefully the rain isn’t going to affect quality too much, but having said that, it’s definitely not helping things.”
On average the wheat has been yielding 8.65 t/ha (3.5 t/acre) at 13% moisture which Mr Boulden was pleased with.
Mr Boulden has also had problems with orange blossom midge infesting some crops.
“My agronomist tells me it could be anywhere between 5-20% infested in some fields and you can see that some of the grain is coming into the store quite small.
“I’ve put various sprays on the wheat but the Hereward and the Claire still got infected- the effects on yield are difficult to measure at the moment.”
Hot and humid weather is having an effect on quality, he adds.
“This tropical weather will bring down quality very quickly if it continues.”
