Winter barley finished for Scottish farmer

Eight hundred acres of winter barley has been cut on the Merton Estates in Kelso, Scotland, said Charlie Stewart.

Yields for Pict and Sequel both averaged 8.4t/ha but slightly less on the lighter soils. He said this was above average, and he was reasonably happy with the bushel weight of 63kg/hl.

Mr Stewart has just started on oilseed rape, but stopped combining when the moisture was higher than it looked at 30%. Courage oilseed rape looked reasonable at 4.4t/ha on the combine, though he expects this to drop when the crop dries.
