Yield consistency is the key to wheat variety success

Syngenta is one of the world’s leading agricultural companies, comprising of crop protection and seeds. Our ambition is to safely help feed the world while taking care of the planet.

Weather at planting remains the biggest factor influencing how much cereal crop is planted in the winter and spring, and drilling dates for a cereal crop can be dramatically different depending on weather at planting.

For winter wheat, having a variety that has a wide drilling window, and provides consistent yields, ensures that the crop will be a success.

Syngenta actively looks for consistency over all regions of the UK, seasons and drilling windows when selecting varieties.

GLEAM – our most adaptable and consistent winter wheat variety. GLEAM has high yields in all regions of the UK and has the widest drilling window, ranging from 1 September to mid-February.

It performs consistently as a first and second wheat and its moderate maturity makes it a good fit in all situations. For GLEAM 103 really is the magic number.

GRAHAM – secure disease resistance and seven years of proven performance. GRAHAM first joined the AHDB Recommended List in 2016 and has been a firm on-farm favourite ever since.

Its reliable disease resistance and stiff straw, allows flexibility of fungicide and PGR timings when the weather makes applications difficult.

Early maturity of GRAHAM allows for a quicker harvest, which secures grain quality in wet summer months.

SY INSITOR – high yield potential year after year. SY INSITOR has had one of the top three yields in each year since it was added to the AHDB Recommended List in 2020.

It has a very high root mass, allowing it to scavenge for water and nutrients, which is reflected in the highest performance on light land (106% CM).

SY INSITOR has a fantastic specific weight of 78.9 kg/hl, which remains relatively high in low specific weight years.

With unpredictable weather conditions at planting and throughout the season, having varieties that perform under different circumstances gives a level of certainty in uncertain times.
