Yorkshire first wheats above average
Yorkshire farmer Andrew Coster had been held back by the rain in Ripon, with 26ha (65ac) left to cut from 160ha (400ac) of winter wheat. “But we only need another two days so we’re not too worried.”
He was pleased with first wheats Einstein and Robigus yielding slightly better than average at 11t/ha (4.4t/ac). Second wheats yielded about average at 7.5t/ha (3t/ac) and 8.75t/ha (3.5t/ac).
“The quality of the wheats has been good and the rest doesn’t seem to have suffered from the weather.”
He said harvest was going similarly to last year. Yields of first wheats were slightly lower but he said last year had been “exceptional”, so he was pleased with how harvest had gone.
Next year he planned to grow Einstein and Robigus. He also planned to grow Alchemy next year, having grown a 3ha (7.5t/ac) seed plot this year which yielded the same as Robigus.
