Foot and mouth disease hits seventh Surrey farm

Foot and mouth disease has been confirmed at a seventh farm in Surrey, according to DEFRA.

This is the latest outbreak of the disease since the first case was confirmed on a farm at Normany, near Pirbright, on the 3 August.

Cattle on the farm were already set for slaughter on DEFRA orders after officials suspected the presence of foot and mouth.  Test results received in the evening of Monday, 24 September confirmed suspicions.

The outbreak is at an un-named farm within the existing Egham Protection Zone and DEFRA has made minor changes to the protection and surveillance zones in the area.

A DEFRA statement urged farmers to remain vigilant.

“It remains essential for animal keepers to practice the highest standards of biosecurity, remain vigilant for disease and report any suspicions immediately. Livestock owners should examine their livestock twice a day,” said a statement
