Horsemeat sold as diced beef in Lancashire
Lancashire County Council has discovered 100kg of horsemeat imported from Hungary falsely labelled as beef, with almost half of the meat already having been sold to the public.
Around 40kg of the meat has been sold through Hungarian Food Ltd’s own market stall in Preston, Lancashire, and through a shop in Liverpool called Taste of Hungary.
Sold in 1kg bags, the meat was labelled as “diced beef”. The remaining unsold meat has been withdrawn from sale.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has notified the European Commission and the Hungarian authorities.
Preston’s local authority is investigating and the meat will be tested for the veterinary drug bute.
The meat was imported by Hungarian Foods Limited in Preston.
