Project aims to improve Welsh dairy efficiency
The Welsh Assembly has launched a £3.3m project to improve efficiency in the dairy supply chain.
The scheme will provide those at various stages in the chain with information needed to achieve the objectives identified in the Strategic Action Plan for the Welsh Dairy Industry published in November 2007.
Those objectives included:
• To provide farmers with comprehensive integrated advice and guidance on business management, new production and environmental techniques
• To support dairy farmers and processors with trade development
• To ensure the adoption of appropriate animal health techniques and welfare initiatives
• To promote sustainable use of natural resources based on sound science
• To support the development of collaborative ventures
“This project represents a real opportunity for us all to consider how best we can look to develop the dairy industry in Wales,” Rural Affairs minister Elin Jones said.
“The Welsh Assembly Government has for some time recognised the importance of the industry and taken steps to offer advice, guidance and where possible financial support.
“Farming Connect has successfully provided advice on key issues while there has been significant investment through the Rural Development Plan’s Processing and Marketing Grant Scheme – all of which has assisted businesses along the supply chain to take advantage of new technology and expertise to improve their position.”
