Ringside: Store lamb prices up at Caledonian Marts

Ringside at…Stirling.
Caledonian Marts traded 2435 store lambs and feeding ewes at Monday’s (11 October) sale. The 1794 store lambs sold to a top of £70 for a pen of Suffolks from JS Ritchie & Son, Lathalmond. Average prices were about £2 up on the week at £47.82 a head. “There were more people looking to buy and fewer sheep brought forward,” said auctioneer Alastair Logan.
“The quality of stock has been good this year – maybe because of the weather last spring, a lot of the poor ones didn’t survive, so there are fewer tail-enders around. The third-draw lambs have all got more scope than usual.”
Feeding ewes averaged about £33-£40 a head and peaked at £58, while ewe lambs levelled at £35-£45, up to a top of £58.
