Capturing the true spirit of farmworkers on camera

It can be hard work, great fun, rewarding and frustrating – and you get to meet some of the best people in the world. There’s no other job quite like being a farmworker – as this selection of pictures demonstrates, says guest editor Nick Padwick (left)

Keith Arnold, a Leicestershire stockman/farmer, with collies Jim and Monty. Keith started with a dozen chickens and still has plenty of passion at 64. A race against time… John Cork (left) and Graham Beck, dehorning a calf in West Sussex.

This shows six-year-old John Graham, working hard on his Granddad’s farm. “A young farmer in the making,” says mum Claire. Chris Leighton, arable craftsman from Stoughton Estate, Leicestershire, and dog, Megan, taking a well-deserved break from autumn drilling. Chris has worked at Stoughton Estate for more than 35 years and seen many changes throughout that period.

This was taken by Sue Garrett after a morning woodcutting on her brother-in-law Richard Garrett’s farm in Northamptonshire. It shows (left to right) John Wincott, with Jim Garrett and Richard.

Rhys Hardy and Jeremy Gilmore castrate a Blonde d’Aquitaine cross Charolais calf. The moment was captured by Craig Holmes, who also sent us the photo of Rhodri Hardy setting up a sweep auger in a silo to unload it ready for this year’s harvest.

Nick’s notes

Nick NotesI like these pictures because they show agriculture in some of its many forms – from the arable side to livestock and from the hard, manual side to the more enjoyable, relaxed and family aspect.
