Photo of the Week: Room with a view – first cut silage

This week’s featured photo is of contractors Watson and Brown carting and filling the clamp with first cut silage.

Farmer Christopher Hollands snapped the shot from the farmhouse kitchen table as he was doing some paperwork.

Christopher said: “We mowed 40 acres [16ha] of first-cut seeds on Thursday VE day to be chopped and clamped the next day. But as so many will know, it was bitterly cold and therefore the grass didn’t wilt, so chopping was postponed till the Saturday.”

The contractors completed the job, including carting and filling the clamp by early afternoon.

Christopher farms with his brother, Mark, and son, Joseph, at Wootton Hill Farm, near Henley-in-Arden in Warwickshire.

They farm 200 head of beef cattle and 283ha of arable, 89ha of grass and a further 121ha of contracting.

The contractors Watson and Brown are former FW Contractor of the Year winners. They won back in 2012 when they were called Watson and Sons. It’s great to see them still going strong.
