Micro Lamb takes Twitter by storm

A small Hebridean lamb has become an unlikely hit on Twitter after a farmer posted photos and updates under the name of “Micro Lamb”.

When Micro Lamb was born in Bulmer, North Yorkshire, on 24 March she weighed just 1.004kg. It was too cold to live outside with the other more substantial lambs, so she was whisked inside to be looked after by rare breeds sheep farmer Gareth Barlow.

After posting a few pictures of his tiny arrival on Twitter, and dubbing her “Micro Lamb”, Gareth was urged by Farmers Weekly reporter Johann Tasker to give the the little star a Twitter page of her own – and so @MicroLamb was born.

“It’s not the most important story at the moment, but I think it’s a good thing that there’s some connection with British agriculture and that people are engaging with it.”

In less than a week, Micro Lamb has picked up nearly 1,000 followers on Twitter, from as far away as New Zealand and Australia. The story made the front page of the Yorkshire Post, was sold to ITV and was featured on dozens of websites, from the Huffington Post to the Dail Mail.

“It’s not the most important story at the moment, but I think it’s a good thing that there’s some connection with British agriculture and that people are engaging with it,” said Gareth.
