Toddler trapped in farm machinery
A toddler is recovering in hospital after becoming trapped in machinery on a farm in North Yorkshire.
The 18-month-old girl is believed to have become trapped in a conveyor belt on the poultry farm in Farnham, near Knaresborough, after part of her clothing was caught.
The child’s mother turned off the machine almost immediately after seeing the girl’s arm had been pulled into the rollers.
Fire and ambulance crews – including a specialist heavy-rescue unit – arrived on the scene around 9.30am on Monday (11 March) and spent 45 minutes dismantling the machine to free the girl.
She was flown by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary to be treated for a serious injury, which is not believed to be life threatening.
Dave Winspear from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, who attended the scene, told Farmers Weekly: “It is worth reminding farmers to make sure machinery is properly guarded and that access is restricted to people who are informed or trained.
“The fact it was a child is irrelevant – it could happen to anyone,” he added.
